What is FIRST?

FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) is a unique varsity sport of the mind designed to help high-school-aged young people discover how interesting and rewarding the life of engineers and researchers can be. The FIRST Robotics Competition challenges teams of young people and their mentors to solve a common problem in a six-week time frame using a standard “kit of parts” and a common set of rules. Teams build robots from the parts and enter them in a series of competitions designed by FIRST. Team members are rewarded for excellence in design, team spirit, gracious professionalism, and maturity. Scoring the most points is a secondary goal. Winning means building partnerships that last and applying math, science and technical skills.

How is the robotics team/program funded?

  • Our primary source of funding is in local, regional, and global business/industry donations; government agencies; and non-profit foundation grants.
  • Our secondary source of funding is parent and individual donations and student fundraisers
  • The Limestone County Schools Superintendent, Board of Education and Directors of our school are very supportive of the program. They allow the teachers to sponsor this program and allow the use of the school facilities.

The Need for Robotics in Education

Thanks to the addition of many programs at the Career Technical Center, our robotics team members have been able to get additional training and resources. The school now gives students access to 3D printers in several classes, a laser engraver, a new CNC mill and lathe, and a host of other high tech tools and equipment. Additionally, the Tech School offers multiple courses in 2D and 3D modeling and design, precision machining, engineering, robotics, programming in JAVA, LabVIEW, and C++, as well as training in animation and video game design.
